Author of the Week — Lara T. Kareem

An interview with Lara T. Kareem. Read our review of her book, Not Just Another Interlude here.

When we moved to WordPress from a different platform over two years ago, we were warmly welcomed by the writing community here. Lara introduced us by interviewing us on her Meet the Blogger series. It’s still our only interview till date. You can read it here. And so, it was a pleasure to feature Lara on our author interview series.

LE: Hello Lara, please tell us a bit about yourself.

Lara: Hi, thanks for having me, when I first discovered you guys, I never thought I would be here! I’m Lara Tommy Kareem, an enormous literary enthusiast, I write literary reviews, edit works of fiction and generally just share my love for the written words with the world. I studied Mass Communication at Crescent University, Abeokuta and I am from Ogun, Nigeria, but I was born, raised and live in Lagos, Nigeria.

LE: We know this is your first published book, and before becoming a published author, you worked in the publishing industry. So, was there anything specific that prompted the move from publisher to author?

Lara: Not Just Another Interlude is my second published work; it is my debut novel and is traditionally published. My first published work is a self-published, booklet titled A Guide to Self-Publishing. I’ve been writing stories since I was twelve, it’s been a lifelong dream of mine to publish my stories. It’s because of this love of writing, that I became interested in the Publishing world. I might be a writer, but my heart is also in publishing. I want to have the best of both worlds.

LE: Yes, that’s right. Now that you mention the booklet, we remember you posted a video talking about your experience publishing that first book. What was the most challenging part of writing this book for you?

Lara: I wrote this story without a plot. It was fun to write because I wrote it on Wattpad and had a lot of support from different readers. Still, many times I found myself lost in how to move it forward, but it was my readers’ constant demand for more chapters that ultimately got me to finish writing it.

LE: We like the title of the book. How did you come up with it?

Lara: It’s funny, the story had another title before, but no matter how hard I try, I can’t remember what it was. I remember wanting to change the title and decided to look at song titles for inspiration, one of my favourite artists is Bryson Tiller, and he has song Just Another Interlude. The story showcases a life-changing moment in Sewa’s life and that’ how Not Just Another Interlude was birthed as the title.

LE: Are you currently working on any book and if you are, what is it about?

Lara: I’ve finished writing the third book I plan to publish, it’s a romance novel as well, and it has supernatural elements. I just started writing a story I finished plotting in 2018, and I’m currently writing it, it’s a young adult fantasy, and finally, I’m reworking a dialogue story I wrote into a longer Christmas themed romance story for publication hopefully at the end of the year.

LE: Lastly, what are your hobbies/what do you do to relax?

Lara: When I want to relax, I love getting lost in entertaining stories, be it a book, movie or tv show. I love video editing, and when those don’t work, I love experimenting in the kitchen.

Lara has two published books:

A Guide to Self-Publishing

Not Just Another Interlude
